Comments:
This elegantly appointed Spanish provincial villa is built above the Carribbean on a lush tropical hillside on the "safe" side of volcano-menaced Montserrat. The "Swiss Family" owners, US ex-pats David and Clover Lee and their tow headed kids, make you feel like long lost cousins. David is an amateur vulcanologist whose hours of dramatic video of the 1995-2003 eruptions were just recently (Oct 16, 2004) aired again on MSNBC Discovery. This and other footage can be viewed on the villa's living room VCR. Copies go for $25. An abridged, 50-minute version is a must-see for those seriously interested in the island's deadly Soufriere volcano. David graciously drove us to the Volcano Observatory after a short tour of the eruption periphery. Trekking back to Gingerbread we combed nearby beaches. My 12-year old found several unusual species of tree frog, iguana, hummingbird, etc. on the hillside. The grounds and interior are immaculately maintained. Questions are encouraged but guests' privacy is carefully respected. This is the perfect place to read or write--or sleep. We found it a welcome respite after 2 weeks on a small sailboat. One has the illusion of being agreeably marooned with Robinson Crusoe. 5 Stars all around.
