Carlisle Travel OverviewThis pleasant mid-size town in south central Pennsylvania (just west of Harrisburg) is home to the U.S. Army War College and Dickinson College. Jim Thorp; noted Native American athlete; trained here. The USAWC post/campus was the site of the government's 'Indian School' in the early 20th century. The post also contains the Hessian Guard House; a building that housed Hessian mercenaries during the Revolutionary War. Gettysburg; the Cumberland Mountains (part of the Appalachians) and the Amish country in Lancaster County are all within a short drive from Carlisle. |
