Elko Travel OverviewElko is located in northeast Nevada; west of Salt Lake City. It is home to one of the largest Basque communities in North America; so the restaurants and food are exquisite. The Ruby Mountains are just south of Elko; where you can arrange to be dropped onto a ski slope from a helicopter. Elko started as one of three main hubs of the railroad system. Now mainly a mining town that saw a boom in the late 1980's it is home to the famed annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering every January. The University of Nevada; now in Reno; started in Elko on what is now the Elko High School campus. |
