Augusta Travel OverviewAugusta has been the capital city since 1827; seven years after Maine was admitted to the Union. The Capital Building sits as a centerpiece for this special City. Augusta is the center of employment; commerce and service for Central Maine and is where most of the state and county governmental agencies are located. Most statewide organizations in Maine base their offices in this city; which is considered a central location to hold meetings; conferences and banquets; usually in Augusta's Civic Center which is located directly off I-95. You will find most points of interest in the donwtown area. The main historic attraction is probably Fort Western; built by the Plymouth Company in 1754 to protect settlers from the French and Indians. It is located on the Kennebec River. Other sights include Blaine House; Capitol Park; a good Children's Discovery Museum and Maine State Library & Museum which focuses on native inhabitants and 19th century technologies. The Pine Tree State Arboretum has 224 acres with different trees - great in Fall. Belgrade Lakes is close by and is a great datrips. |
