Louisville Travel OverviewA typical American town; Louisville's traditions are blending with mondern values. Farming is important here; too. In many ways; Louisville is like its own thing; it doesn't seem like part of Kentucky at all. The Kentucky stereotypes (of which there are many; including the image of Kentuckians as barefoot hicks sitting in Appalachian shacks drinking bourbon; smoking cigarettes; eating fried chicken; and coming out to bet on horses once a year for Derby) fall particularly far from the truth in Louisville. Louisville is a city with a vibrant arts scene; a decent amount of hip stores; and excellent record shops. But it's also far from being an uber-cool metropolis; which means you can still find kitschy clothes at Goodwill before they're snatched up by vintage stores and resold for ten times their original value. Louisville is a study in contradictions. There's one side to the city; particularly in the South end and in the suburbs; which still houses plenty of beer-swillin' rednecks eager to tell racist and sexist jokes. But there's also another side to the city with good coffeeshops and friendly locals who are well-connected with the local progressive activism scene. One last thing: Louisville has more beautiful hipster girls per capita than any other city in the country; but they're not the nicest girls. Check out Bardstown Rd. on a busy night and you'll see what I mean. |
