Collinsville Travel Overview

Collinsville itself is unremarkable; but it is the sight of Cahokia Mounds State Historic Sight; the most important center of the Mississippian mound building culture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  At its height in the 11th or 12th century; over 20;000 people called Cahokia home.  About 80 mounds still remain at the site; including Monk's Mound; the largest prehistoric structure in North America at 100 feet high.  The visitor's center includes an introductory video and a museum that illustrates various aspects of Mississipian life.
